Dar al-Mustafa Mawlid (Arabic & English) - Monday, March 31, 2008

Bismillah.
As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh.

The following are recordings from the huge Mawlid gathering held at Dar al-Mustafa in Tarim, Yemen on Monday, March 31, 2008.

There are two files here (both of which start a little late but finish till the end):

  1. Arabic audio of singing and speeches: This file is 2 hour and 17 minutes long. The singing is from the beginning of the file until minute marker 32:25, at which point the speeches start.
  2. Live English simultaneous interpretation: This file is 1 hour long. Note: Please realize how difficult it is to do a simultaneous interpretation (and believe me, this faqir knows this first hand!) and that there may be a few omissions and or slight mistakes. It is always best to ask or double check if something was not clear (rather than assume or formulate a bad opinion).

The order of the noble and distinguished speakers:

  • Habib Ali Mashhour bin Hafiz (the Mufti of Tarim and older brother of Sayyidi al-Habib Umar bin Hafiz)
  • Habib Abdullah bin Shihab (the noble son of one of Habib Umar bin Hafiz's most respected teachers)
  • Habib Salim al-Shatiri
  • Habib Umar bin Hafiz (the Dean of Dar al-Mustafa for Islamic Studies)

UPDATE: There seems to be an issue with playback on the English stream for some users. Please make sure that you have the latest version of the QuickTime Player installed on your system. It can be downloaded for free here: www.QuickTime.com

8-Week Arabic Intensive with Zaytuna Institute in Berkeley, CA

Bismillah.
As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh . . .

Zaytuna Institute is holding an 8-week Arabic Intensive this summer (June 23, 2008 to August 15, 2008), on site at the University of California, Berkeley. The dedicated website can be found here: http://www.arabicintensive.org/

Some basic information below (some of which was taken from IslamCrunch):

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

The Zaytuna Summer Arabic Intensive provides introductory- and intermediate-level students with a rigorous, complete-immersion language experience in an Arabic-only environment, integrating the acquisition of listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills at an accelerated pace. By the end of the program, which is based on a communicative approach to studying Arabic, introductory students who have successfully completed all requirements will be qualified to enroll in a second-year university Arabic course. Intermediate students who have completed all requirements will be qualified to take advanced-level courses.

The Zaytuna Summer Arabic Intensive is designed to meet the objectives of ten-unit summer intensives offered at various American universities. As one of the few academic-centered Arabic intensives offered by a Muslim seminary in North America, the program also offers students optional instruction in Qur’anic recitation (tajweed) and memorization (hifz). Additional features include convenient and secure housing within walking distance to classes and an exclusive guest lecture series by established scholars of Arabic and Islamic studies.

Basing their program on the “Complete Immersion Experience”, students will be living in the Westminster House in Berkeley, where they have the option of completely immersing themselves in a Arabic-only environment or a partial Arabic environment (Elementary Arabic level).

FACULTY:

The heart of the Zaytuna Summer Arabic Intensive program is our teachers. The Two Poems Read at RIS6

Bismillah.
As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah . . .

For those that inquired about the two poems read by your brother at RIS6 this year, here they are:

MUSLIM SALAD

By: Aaron Haroon Sellars © 2007

Before Islam I was lost
And after Islam I was lost
Between this and that group
Was I tossed

A bookstore Shaykh
Not even worth a dollar
With do-it-yourself Islam
Who needs a scholar?

Tossed so much
Might as well been a salad
I was quoting Hadeeth
But my wudu was invalid

If I can’t purify my outer
Then what about my inner?
Piles of books
But still a big sinner

What I know, doesn’t show
And now I know better
That’s what happens without the spirit
And only the letter

So attach myself I must
To scholars with unbroken chains
For this is the means
By which pure knowledge remains

LIKE A BUTTERFLY

By: Aaron Haroon Sellars © 2007

The capital of life
Is in every breathe
So take advantage
Before none is left
Don’t judge the truth
By what people do
First find the truth
And do what’s right for you
Lift your soul up high
From the fakeness on the ground
Search deep inside
And the Real will be found

Like a Butterfly
I want to Change!
Like a Butterfly
Fly out of Range!

You can’t see the sun
If you look it in the eye
You can’t live your life
If you never try
If you want to walk on water
You must take a step
But you won’t move a foot
With a faith that is inept
So if you want to move the mountains
You need a power not your own
You can move the mountains

When certainty is shown
Don’t you know that the graveyard
Is the richest place on earth?
Because of all the hopes and dreams
That lay beneath the dirt

Like a Butterfly
I want to Change!
Like a Butterfly
Fly out of Range!

So bless me like Muhammad!
Help me like Moses!
Save me like Jesus!
And all the Saints that know this!

Bismillah.
As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah . . .

Here is the latest audio file from our Friday Night Halaqah at the Medina Center in Maryland (USA).

This particular session focused on the importance of and the secrets to be found in the night prayer (Qiyam al-Layl, or Tahajjud), taken from both the Riyadh al-Saliheen of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him), and the Book of Assistance of Imam al-Haddad (may Allah have mercy on him).

The file is a 55.5 MB MP3 (encoded at 96 kbps/32 kHz) and is about 1 hour and 20 minutes long.

As always, comments are most welcome...

UK - May 2006

  • Yellow Fields
During the last days of April and the first week of May 2006, I had the honor of attending many of the gatherings and lectures of Habib Umar bin Hafiz in the UK. It was a truly blessed journey--many hearts were mended, great spiritual openings were brought to the West, and countless souls were lead closer to their Lord.
